THE SPEECHWRITER
In The Speechwriter by J.P. Maximus, a university's presidential elections are anticipated to become the most memorable until a masked killer begins to target particular students. The election now becomes a racially driven battlefield for the candidates, and they seek out the masters of speech writing. Enter Mark and Jerome, lifelong friends and confidantes, both accomplished, talented and respected speechwriters and now on opposing teams. As the elections loom closer, Mark and Jerome's friendship and ethics are challenged. The question must be asked: what is more important? Their friendship or conquering the other? Both candidates will stop at nothing to win, but who will be left standing at the end? With the killer's identity still unknown, the climactic, sensational election battle will be something no one will ever forget.
If you enjoy a story that has twists, turns and surprises throughout, then The Speechwriter by J.P. Maximus will not disappoint. The way the writer has woven such detail into his characters and story lines is amazing. I was impressed by the way the writer managed to incorporate two protagonists. The plot is full of tension and the relationship between Mark and Jerome was heart-warming. The dialogue was authentic and perfect for each unique character. The author is a true professional at building tension and conflict. A superb story from start to finish. The ending was another clever twist and unexpected. When I thought I knew what was going to happen, the author took me in another direction. I would recommend reading this book more than once because it is so layered. A fantastic read. --Readers' Favorite
THE SPEECHWRITER challenges the reader to examine today’s racial divide in America through the eyes of white student, Mark and his relationship with best friend, Jerome, who is black. Through their different reactions to the responses of authority in the aftermath of a racially motivated murder on their university campus, we are given a glimpse into the nuances of racism and are challenged to explore our own preconceived notions. The novel brilliantly tackles the subject of subtle racism, the racism denied by whites, yet dealt with by black Americans daily. It is a novel worth reading, and one that stays with you. A timely and thought provoking read. --IndieReader
REDISCOVERING CHARLIE
In his novel, "Rediscovering Charlie", author J. P. Maximus deftly explores three fundamental questions: What is balance between our destiny and predestination?; What are the acceptable limits of love and sacrifice?; And, if you could go back and relive your life, how different would things turn out?
These are the challenges that confront Dr. MacKinnon as he struggles to understand his losses and unravel the mystery of his own destiny, and that of his son Charlie.
There is only one obstacle to Charlie fulfilling his destiny: he is quadriplegic with only partial movement of his arms. Motivated by his condition to find a remedy, Charlie and his father are on the verge of a cure for not only Charlie -- but for all diseases using gene therapy.
Destiny is thwarted when Charlie passes away due to an unfortunate incident, and the spite of those who didn't wish to see him succeed. The company declines without its most brilliant mind having closed the final chapter of their search. Grieved by the loss of a son and best friend, Dr. MacKinnon finds it difficult to cope -- but he has a plan: there are strategies at his disposal to have his son back using his DNA.
Risking imprisonment to reunite with his son, the evil machinations of those who wish to harm them challenge their fate. Dr. MacKinnon's ultimate hope: to have Charlie back with his one obstacle removed. Their destiny can be then fulfilled; unless of course, removing that obstacle reveals a new secret. With the hope of humanity hanging in the balance.
Critique: An original, thought-provoking, and inherently compelling epic novel that showcases author J. P. Maximus genuine flair for engaging his reader's rapt attention and holding it firmly from cover to cover, "Rediscovering Charlie" is an extraordinary read and very highly recommended, especially for community library General Fiction collections. --Midwest Book Review
In REDISCOVERING CHARLIE, author J.P. Maximus punches up the trite genre of bringing a loved one back from the dead. With an apparent knowledge of genetics and its possibilities in cheating death, Maximus effectively merges the “playing God” genre with Oliver Stone-type conspiracies. --IndieReader
